Google Play Store now offers device-specific ratings and reviews

The great thing about Android is that it works on a wide variety of devices. Smartphones, tablets, refrigerators, in-car entertainment systems, and much more. With a wide range of Android devices, you also get different experiences.

This is where integrated app ratings and rating systems begin to show their problems. An app may be admired by thousands of people, but hundreds of people may have concerns with it. There is also, As such, Google has announced plans to make the Play Store rating system more personalized by adding device-specific rating filters. Thankfully, this change is finally here, almost a year after it was first announced.

Esper’s Mishaal Rahman spotted the Google Play Store implementing this new system. This should now be enabled for all users. The change describes the Google Play Store as showing ratings “based on the device you’re using,” making ratings and reviews more relevant, and “allowing mobile phone users to post more filters by country or region”.

When you open the Google Play Store, you’ll see how ratings are calculated, whether the ratings are based on recent ratings, and whether the ratings you see are from people in the same region who share the same device type.

This is a good first step, but may require work in some areas. As Rahman pointed out, Google still classifies foldable devices as tablet devices. It’s not a big deal, but given the changing landscape of mobile devices, more improvements could be made to make the system a little cleaner.
